Step Back in Time: The Magic of Silent Films
Long before The Jazz Singer and the rise of “talkies,” silent films dominated the silver screen from the mid-1890s through the 1920s. Despite the name, these films were rarely ever truly silent—they were almost always accompanied by live music that added emotion and energy to each scene.
To modern eyes, the dramatic facial expressions and exaggerated gestures of silent film actors may seem over-the-top. But it’s this expressive style that gives silent films their charm—and makes them so entertaining to watch today.
Unfortunately, many silent films have been lost to time due to the fragile film materials used in the early days of cinema. In this program, we’ll explore the fascinating history of silent films and enjoy several short clips that showcase their artistry and appeal.
To wrap up the experience, you'll create a replica of a vintage film reel—perfect for displaying your own photos in a creative, nostalgic way.
