Program Description
Event Details
In commemoration of America's 250th anniversary, the St. Charles City-County Library is offering a wide variety of presentations and programs throughout the year, highlighting local, state, and national events, time periods, and cultural moments.
Anyone who has seen the movie "Glory" knows that African American soldiers made a critical contribution to Union Victory during the Civil War. What far fewer people know is that the first African American Soldiers to fight for the Union mostly came from Missouri, serving in the 1st Kansas Colored Infantry Regiment months before Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. They also were the first black soldiers to see combat, right here in Missouri at the Battle of Island Mound in October 1862!
Join us as we celebrate Black History Month by learning about this largely overlooked chapter in Missouri History!
