Program Description

Event Details

In commemoration of America's 250th anniversary, the St. Charles City-County Library is offering a wide variety of presentations and programs throughout the year, highlighting local, state, and national events, time periods, and cultural moments.

Celebrate Women’s History Month by exploring the powerful symbolism of the “Golden Lane,” the 1916 silent protest in St. Louis where thousands of women in white carried gold parasols to advocate for the right to vote.

In this event, participants will learn about the role parasols played in the women’s suffrage movement: as tools for advertising, symbols of protest, and even unexpected defensive “weapons.”

Attendees will then paint their own paper parasol inspired by historic suffrage designs, including the iconic yellow-and-white color palette and “Votes for Women” motifs. Participants are also welcome to create a parasol with a design entirely of their own choosing. Whatever the design, you’ll leave with a beautiful keepsake and a deeper connection to women’s history.
