Program Description

Event Details

Pick up copies of this month's books at the Deer Run Branch and read either or both books prior to the meeting.

A book club for the whole family! Each month, we will provide one copy of a chapter book suitable for grades 4-6 and one copy of a picture book suitable for grades K-3. Read either or both books (we encourage reading them aloud!) and come to the Library to discuss the books with other families, do a related activity and craft, discover new reads similar to each month's books, and pick up copies of the next month's books!

This is a family/group program; children attending must be accompanied by an adult.

Number the Stars by Lois Lowry: It is 1943, and for Annemarie Johansen, life in Copenhagen is a complicated mix of ordinary home and school time, food shortages, and the constant presence of Nazi soldiers. Bravery seems a vague virtue--one possessed by dragon-slaying knights in the bedtime stories she tells her younger sister, Kirsti. As the German troops begin their campaign to "relocate" all the Jews of Denmark, the Johansens take in Annemarie's best friend, Ellen Rosen, and pretend she is part of the family. The girls live like sisters, until it becomes clear something more needs to be done to save Ellen, her family, and the Jews of Denmark.

Diana's White House Garden by Elisa Carbone: Diana Hopkins lived in a white house. THE White House. World War II is in full force across the seas. It's 1943, President Roosevelt is in office, and Diana's father, Harry Hopkins, is his chief advisor. And Diana wants to be part of the war effort. After some well-intentioned missteps (her quarantine sign on her father's office door was not well-received), the President requests her help with his newest plan for the country's survival: Victory Gardens!
