About THE LAST OUTLAWS: THE DESPERATE FINAL DAYS OF THE DALTON GANG

As the west became more populated at the close of the 18th century, law enforcement eventually overcame the lawlessness that had characterized an earlier American western frontier. However, one more epic battle was to play out. The infamous Dalton gang would ride into Coffeyville, Kansas on the morning of October 5th , 1892, with a bold (or maniacal) plan to rob two banks simultaneously, with five men.

Tom Clavin tells this story as only the foremost contemporary writer of the American West can. Starting with their legacy, as cousins to the Youngers of the James-Younger gang, and their early days working in law enforcement, Tom tells the page-turning story of brothers who became disillusioned with the life, and pay, of lawmen, and turned to crime. They robbed stages and trains and were particularly adept at staying out of jail. They figured one final grand heist would leave them with enough cash to hightail it to Mexico and retire, but the townspeople had other ideas.

This is a fascinating, yet not widely known, story of the last days of the western frontier; the lawmen, settlers, and native Americans who inhabited this region, and the last outlaws. Tom has once again done the deep research and delivered the goods. I have never seen a movie western that could compare to Tom’s description of this firefight.
