Program Description

Event Details

Have a lot of vintage sewing doo-dads hanging around? Your grandmother's tatting shuttle? Your great aunt's thimble? A unique pin cushion? A picture of you and your relative sewing together?

A shadow box is a place to gather all those treasures in one spot!

SUPPLIES YOU BRING:

  • Shadow box (there are many size and style options available). The class sample will use a 11" x 14" size that has a bulletin board backing and a hinged door with glass. Found online. Make sure the shadow box has the depth you will need for your items.
  • Vintage sewing items (suggestions listed below)
  • Optional background - a piece of fabric large enough to be the "back" of the shadow box...i.e., a vintage quilt block or reproduction or authentic vintage fabric could look great as the background. Shadow boxes often already have a backing, so this would be optional if you like the backing the box comes with.

You'll spend time in class planning the arrangement of your shadow box and looking at other boxes for inspiration. We will have glue guns. We will also discuss alternate methods of fastening things in place. Some shadow boxes come with a bulletin board style backing, so pins could be used to tack things in place. Lots of options here!

SUGGESTIONS FOR VINTAGE ITEMS:

You probably have a lot of these hanging around!

Notions in old packaging, old metal zippers, special buttons, snaps, seam ripper, buckle, patterns, thimbles, small scissors, measuring tape, wooden spools, unusual sewing gadgets, trim, sewing charms, small embroidered item, patches, tatting shuttle, unusual pincushion, needle package, sewing advertisements, old sewing patterns, sewing pictures of you, etc.

An email will be sent out a week prior to this program with any additional information or instructions. A picture of the class sample will be added to this description once it is complete.

Take a look on the Internet for inspiration! There are lots of great ideas out there.
