In this series, we will step beyond the pages of the chosen book and explore the real life people, events, and ideas that inspired the author to write and share their story with the world.
After being rejected by 26 publishers for being "too different," Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time was first published in 1962. It became an instant success with readers, and was the recipient of the 1963 Newbery Medal. L'Engle once shared that in order to write great literature for kids the “author needs to be sincere, create layered stories, trust children to understand what adults often do not, and connect on a level that once came naturally.” Madeleine L'Engle's journey as an author was not a straight path to success, and she approached writing in a way that was outside of the traditional literary box.
