Family Book Club: "Because of Winn-Dixie" and "Every Dog in the Neighborhood"

Pick up copies of this month's books at the Youth Services desk at the Middendorf-Kredell branch. The books featured here will be discussed this month.

A book club for the whole family! Each month, we will provide one copy of a chapter book suitable for grades 4-6 and one copy of a picture book suitable for grades K-3. Read either or both books (we encourage reading them aloud!) and come to the Library to discuss the books with other families, do a related activity and craft, discover new reads similar to each month's books, and pick up copies of the next month's books!

This is a family/group program; children attending must be accompanied by an adult.

Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo: One summer's day, ten-year-old India Opal Buloni goes down to the local supermarket for some groceries—and comes home with a dog. But Winn-Dixie is no ordinary dog. It's because of Winn-Dixie that Opal begins to make friends. And it's because of Winn-Dixie that she finally dares to ask her father about her mother, who left when Opal was three. In fact, as Opal admits, just about everything that happens that summer is because of Winn-Dixie.

Every Dog in the Neighborhood by Philip Stead: How many dogs live in the neighborhood? Louis decides to find out—by meeting every single one. Louis really wants a dog, but his Grandma insists, “There are enough dogs in the neighborhood already.”  While Louis disagrees, he realizes he needs more information to support his argument: so he sets out to figure out how many dogs live in the neighborhood. By the time he gets home Louis is ready to tell Grandma just how many dogs are in the neighborhood. . . . But Grandma thinks he just might have missed one.
