Pick up a copy of "The Secret Garden on 81st" by Ivy Noelle Weir at the Youth Services desk at the Middendorf-Kredell branch. Our other book, "Jayden's Impossible Garden" by Mélina Mangal is available to read for free on hoopla.

A book club for the whole family! Read either or both books (we encourage reading them aloud!) and come to the Library to discuss the books with other families, do a related activity and craft, discover new reads similar to each month's books, and pick up copies of the next month's books! This is a family/group program; children attending must be accompanied by an adult.

Find out more about this month's books below:

two book covers; one shows a group of three kids surrounded by flowers and the other shows a boy adding soil to a flowerpot

The Secret Garden on 81st Street: Mary Lennox is a loner living in Silicon Valley. With her parents always working, video game and tech become her main source of entertainment and 'friends.' When her parents pass away in a tragic accident, she moves to New York City to live with her uncle who she barely knows, and to her surprise, keeps a gadget free home. Looking for comfort in this strange, new reality, Mary discovers an abandoned rooftop garden and an even bigger secret...her cousin who suffers from anxiety. With the help of her new friends, Colin and Dickon, Mary works to restore the garden to its former glory while also learning to grieve, build real friendships, and grow.

Jayden's Impossible Garden: Amidst all the buildings, people, and traffic in his neighborhood, Jayden sees nature everywhere: the squirrels scrounging, the cardinals calling, and the dandelions growing. But Mama doesn't believe there's nature in the city. So Jayden sets out to help Mama see what he sees. With the help of his friend Mr. Curtis, Jayden plants the seeds of a community garden and brings together his neighbors-and Mama-to show them the magic of nature in the middle of the city.

Additional physical copies may be available to check out from our catalog: The Secret Garden on 81st (print) and Jayden's Impossible Garden (print).
